A 45-year-old Hawthorne man is being held in jail on charges of domestic violence and child abuse.

It has been reported that the man began choking his wife while they were having an argument pertaining to their finances. The couple have six children between the ages of 4 and 16. The children witnessed their father’s attack on their mother and tried to step in to help their mother.

According to the Hawthorne police lieutenant, the children’s involvement angered the man, who then took a can of pepper spray that was kept in the house and sprayed the children.

The 45-year-old father of six is now in custody with a $90,000 bail set. Investigations continue into the accusations of child abuse and domestic violence that took place.
